2010 Lorin Maazel Master Classes
April 30, 2010 Update: All positions for this year's Master Class program have been filled. Thank you for your interest.
Over a four to five week period at Maestro Maazel’s farm in Castleton, Virginia, a small group of conducting apprentices will participate in rehearsals, readings and more formal classes centered around the repertoire of the 2010 Castleton Festival. This unique opportunity will allow young conductors to work directly with Maestro Maazel in an intensive, interactive program that combines both mentoring and performance activity in the opera and symphonic fields. The Master Class participants will also share among themselves a public concert program with the Festival Orchestra.
Who: Up to six apprentice conductors will be selected to participate in the Master Classes taught by Maestro Maazel. The ideal apprentice candidates are emerging professionals up to the age of 32 though no firm age limit has been established.
What: In addition to attending Festival symphonic and opera rehearsals, a series of classes will be offered by Maestro Maazel, primarily focused on repertoire for three Festival concerts, as well as opera excerpts. The Master Class will address such topics as What to Listen for While Conducting, Cue Choreography, Musical Structuring, Rehearsal Technique, How to Accompany and The Music Behind the Notes, among many others. The majority of these classes will take place with piano, although there will be several readings with the Festival orchestra, including preparation for the Master Class concert.
When: Mid-June – July 25, 2010. The exact starting date will be announced.
Repertoire: Operatic/staged repertoire to include
Puccini: Il Trittico (complete)
Stravinsky: L’histoire du Soldat
Britten: The Turn of the Screw
De Falla: El retablo de Maese Pedro (Master Peter’s Puppet Show)
Symphonic repertoire to be announced shortly.
How to apply: Please submit your CV or résumé, a DVD of a past conducting experience(s) (ideally with several excerpts of varied repertoire), and a brief cover letter, containing at least one professional reference. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.
